Designing the Fastest Car on The Planet, Scientists at Work:

Apart from a brief break in the 1960s and 1970s, British engineering and drivers have played a dominant role in setting the land speed record in the fastest cars on the planet. Starting from Lydston Hornsted’s Benz No. 3, which broke the record to reach 124mph exactly 100 years ago, to the current land-speed-record holder Andy Green’s Thrust SSC, which crossed the supersonic barrier to reach 763mph in 1997.

Now the people behind Thrust SSC have set themselves an even more challenging target to reach the land speed record of 1,000 mph in a new car called Bloodhound SSC. The target date for achieving it is 2016 and it will be attempted in the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa, where they have created a track that is 12 miles long and two miles wide.

The hope in doing this is to inspire a new generation of British engineers and scientists, promote British engineering around the world and spin out technologies that will affect the design of engineering applications and bolster the UK economy.

How to stay on the ground

It is now seven years since I first sat down with Ron Ayers and Richard Noble, who led Thrust SSC. In that meeting, we discussed the idea and, specifically, aerodynamic challenges of taking a land-based vehicle to 1,000 mph. It was soon after that bizarre encounter that the picture below turned up on my desk at Swansea University (where I was completing a PhD at the time).

A key question when starting to design Bloodhound was: how can we keep the car on the ground? This is important because cars at such speeds are at the risk of taking off, much like how airplanes do. For comparison, a typical passenger plane takes off at about 150mph. Of course the thrust offered to planes is meant for it to take off, but for cars going at 1,000mph, any mistake in the aerodynamics would mean disaster. Although this hasn’t happened in recent attempts of speed records, an example from 1967 when Donald Campbell tried to reach a water speed record illustrates what could go wrong.

Technology developments and the bravery of drivers have kept creating new land speed records all through the last century. Even though the first record was set in an electric powered car, most of the first half of the century worth of records were then dominated by piston engine driven vehicles. These internal combustion engines, as they are known, are found in almost all modern petrol or diesel cars. Using these engines the record could be reached only up to 400 mph.

To push beyond, car builders needed more power. That is when they turned to jet engines and rockets to take over the job of propelling these vehicle. This was also the time when, as speeds kept going up, the resistance caused by air became too important to ignore. Aerodynamics of cars became critical in a successful land speed record attempt.

Secondly the tray can get jammed rendering the iPhone useless. Try taking it to an Apple store and see what they say because you have just voided your warranty.

Ok, so we have the ‘bad’ ways to unlock an iPhone 5 series, what about the ‘good’? A Network Unlock which is also known as an IMEI Unlock is incredibly simple and easy to do and will unlock your iPhone. You pay someone with the know-how to access Apple’s global database containing all the iPhone registration numbers (IMEI) and they then transfer your iPhone number to the ‘whitelist’ meaning that you can use that phone on ANY NETWORK you want.

When the unlocking is complete you get a nice email to confirm that you can now use your iPhone on any network and your iTunes greets you with this message when you connect your phone:


So, once you see this message your iPhone is officially unlocked, for good. Also, a big bonus of this method is that your warranty is still intact.

I never knew about this method until recently and I thought the only way to get a network unlock was to pay around $300 to my carrier for them to do it for me.

No way is that a reasonable fee I thought so I went online and searched around for IMEI unlocking companies. These are the ones I found and they are safe, have a good reputation and customer support and provide a proper unlock iPhone 5/5s/5c series.

 iUnlock Pro (10/10 – pick of the bunch)

They offer complete iPhone 5 series unlocks at a cheap price and have great customer service into the bargain as well. Also, their delivery was really fast and they are a service that does provide a way to unlock iPhone 5.

I started the process on a Tuesday night and by the next morning my iPhone 5 was unlocked. Incredible speed. I thought I would have to wait another week or so before I heard anything back but once I connected my iPhone to iTunes the next day I got the message I posted above.

Dealing with them was a pleasure. They offer great customer support and even though some of the question I had probably sounded a bit silly to them, they answered in a polite manner so I understood every step of the process.

2. IMEI Unlocking (OK service, 7/10)

I would use this service as backup to iUnlock Pro. The guys that run it seem to be good at what they do however I found that their customer service was lacking somewhat.

They weren’t rude or anything, it was just that it took 4 or 5 days before I got a reply from them – perhaps they are busy and this was before they managed to unlock iPhone 5s ? On top of this I thought their website was a bit difficult to figure out navigation wise and they don’t support all normal payment processes either which isn’t ideal. Although I was wondering how to unlock iPhone 5/5s/5c and they did help me out.

Not a terrible service but they pale in comparison to iUnlock Pro.

3. IMEI Codes (Puzzling website with average service, 6/10)

These guys are OK was well although they suffer from many of the same issues as IMEI unlocking but they do unlock iPhone 5c and other models.

Again, not terrible but certainly not the best and should only be used if the other services such as iUnlock Pro aren’t available.

    Software unlocking does not work. Period. Stay well away if you don’t want to be scammed.
    Hardware unlocking does work but it is drawn out and will void your iPhone warranty.
    IMEI unlocks are, as I have shown you, the safest and most reliable method to have your iPhone 5 series unlocked.

Hopefully this is clear. If you are wondering how to unlock iPhone 5/5s/5c/ or having a lot of trouble getting your iPhone 5 series unlocked then I would recommend getting in touch with iUnlock Pro for a safe and fast unlocking process.

As I have shown you, there are several other options to getting your iPhone 5 series unlocked and being able to connect to another network but they are either a complete scam or just aren’t safe.

How to unlock the Samsung Galaxy S4

You may have heard about this thing called “unlocking” your phone. For the tech-savvy, this is pretty standard stuff, but for everyone else, let us outline the basics of what phone unlocking is, why you might want to do it, and how to go about it.

When you buy a phone from a carrier like AT&T, Vodafone, or Rogers, they give you a SIM card with all of your relevant account information on it. The phone you get from that carrier won’t be able to make calls or sends texts until the SIM card is installed in your phone. Getting data for web browsing and apps is only possible over Wi-Fi without a SIM card installed.

The thing is, service providers aren’t interested in just selling you a phone; they want to make sure you’re paying them for access to their cell towers and the associated voice and data services. To do that, phone makers allow service providers to lock the device so only SIM cards from that carrier can work in a given phone.

Now, there is a process to unlock the SIM slot so you can use any SIM card in a phone. Keep in mind that this doesn’t guarantee that your phone will actually work with any carrier, either at home or elsewhere in the world, since a phone’s antenna is tuned to specific towers, and putting in a new SIM card can’t change that. Things get legally sticky when it comes to unlocking, too. Any new phone you buy in the U.S. can now only be legally unlocked by your carrier under specific circumstances. Usually that involves having had service for 60 days or more first, but the fine print varies from carrier to carrier. You can read up more about the legality issue here.

 Why unlock your Samsung Galaxy S4?

Why would you want to bother? The main reason would be to use your phone with another carrier while visiting another country. Once your phone is unlocked, you can take out your home SIM card and pick up another one in that country. Generally speaking, the service you’ll get from a local carrier is cheaper than what you could get with a roaming package from your carrier back home. Another use case is simply to switch carriers while you’re at home.

Again, unlocking your phone doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually be able to connect to the towers used by your new service provider. Sometimes you’ll be able to get basic access, but not higher-speed LTE. To determine which networks your phone can connect to, first you need to know the model number of your Samsung Galaxy S4. Yes, there are a couple of different ones. Swipe down from the top of the screen of your phone to get the notification tray, tap the settings gear icon in the top-right, and tap the More tab at the top. Down at the bottom, tap About device and make note of the model number. Now find that model number in this table in the top row, and you’ll be able to see which 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE wireless bands that phone can access below.  Also note whether those bands are using UMTS / HSPA or EV-DO.

Finding IMEI on Samsung Galaxy S4

Those numbers determine which service providers you can connect to. Now to identify which carrier you’d like to use your Samsung Galaxy S4 with and which wireless bands they use. This can require a bit of detective work. If a Google search for “_____ wireless bands” doesn’t help you, the most straightforward route is to get in touch with the new carrier and ask them directly which wireless bands their towers use. Wireless band information on American carriers can be found here. With these two pieces of information (bands your Samsung Galaxy S4 can access and bands your target carrier uses), you can determine if it’s worth your while to unlock your device. If there’s a match between the two, you’re good to go. If not, you’ll need to find a carrier that will support some (or more of) the bands that your phone can. If none of your potential carriers support the same bands as your Samsung Galaxy S4, unlocking is likely not a viable option for you.

That’s a lot to take in for a first-timer, but luckily, figuring all of that out is the hard part. Actually getting your phone unlocked is pretty easy. Be sure to call up your carrier first to see if they'll be able to unlock your device for you - if you've got a good reason, they'll do it for you. If not, there are third parties you can go with, though that will void your warranty. The only piece of information you’ll need is the IMEI number of your device. This is a unique identifier code that can be found in the same About device screen we mentioned earlier. Swipe down from the top of the screen of your phone to get the notification tray, tap the settings gear icon in the top-right, and tap the More tab at the top. Down at the bottom, tap About device, then tap Status, and scroll down to find the IMEI number. You can also dial *#06# from the phone dialler to get your IMEI. With that, you should be able to order an unlock code for your phone.

There are a number of different places you can go to get an unlock code. We like these guys, but there are a number of stores, both on- and offline, that can generate a code for you once they have your phone model number, original carrier, and IMEI number in hand. When you put in a SIM card from your new carrier, you should be prompted for an unlock code. Punch that in and you should be good to go. If you can’t get your hands on the new SIM right away, but want to have your Samsung Galaxy S4 prepared ahead of time, you should be able to input the unlock code by opening the phone dialler app and punching in #7465625*638*(unlock code)# or #0111*(unlock code)#.

There's one big thing to keep in mind here: you only get ten wrong guesses at punching in your unlock code. Don't keep putting in bad unlock codes, otherwise you won't be able to put in any unlock code at all, even if it's good, and the phone will be permanently stuck with its original carrier.

How to install Nepali Unicode ?

or this you've to install Nepali Unicode Environment if you want to type in Romanized Nepali.

Well, Unicode is 16-bit character set standard, designed to include characters appearing in most languages. This is very helpful in localization project. Nepali unicode font has been developed by Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP). Since, unicode is a standard, we really don't have to think of individual font. For ex; Preeti font(It is true type Nepali font), if someone has worked on that font, then he/she may not be able to open his document in some other computer where there is no Preeti font. So, Preeti font must be there too. This is lots of hassles. There are lots of Nepali TTF fonts which means all fonts have to be installed every time you work on any documents that is created using those fonts.

Therefore, Unicode removes all these restrictions. It's the universal standard. MPP has released a software to write in Nepali unicode from you own computer. But before that you've to know what are the process. Though, all these processes are mentioned in their official website www.mpp.org.np. I've simplified and tried to put them here concisely:

1) First of all, you've to make your system ready for Nepali Unicode. The process is different for windows 2000 and windows xp.

For windows 2000
- Click Start/Settings/Control Panel
- Click Regional Options
- On the General tab go to the 'Language settings for the system' and scroll down. Ensure that Indic Language is checked.
(You will need Windows 2000 CD to complete the installation)

For windows XP
- Go to Control Panel
- Click on the "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options"
- Click on the "Regional and Language Options"
- On the Languages tab, ensure that "Complex script and right-to-left languages" is checked
- On the Languages tab, ensure that "Complex script and right-to-left languages" is checked. (You will need Windows XP CD to complete the installation)

2) Now install the Nepali Unicode Environment. Download this from here or here


3) Okay, last step is to configure the keyboard settings.

In windows XP,
- Go to the "Date, Time, Languages, and Regional Options" on the control panel again.
- Click on the "Regional and Languages Options"
- Click on the Languages Tab
- Click on the Details button
- In the installed services, click on the Add button
- In the Input Language, select Sanskrit
- In the Keyboard layout/IME, select Nepali Unicode

In windows 2000,
- Go to the "Regional Options" on the control panel again.
- Click on the Input Locale tab
- Click on the Add button
- In the Input Locale, select Sanskrit
- In the Keyboard Layout/IME select Nepali Unicode from the selection box.
- Click ok and ok on the Regional Option panel as well.

After Rebooting your computer you will be ready to use Nepali font and the typing tutor as well as the sorting utility.

Okie everything is done. You've to type but how? Romanized unicode is very easy. Forget the 'ba,ka,ma,na' in old type methods. That's hectic. Just check out the keyboard layout and start practicing. Layouts are here.

Practicing?? you opened Notepad or wordpad (anything) but couldn't figure how to type there in nepali. You did it right? but failed.. i know. You've to change the language settings. You could do that in shortcut way. Just press ALT + SHIFT while you are in Notepad or anyother wordprocessor and start typing. To revert back to English language, press ALT + SHIFT once more. SO, this ALT+SHIFT is the magic key combo, you see!!!

Now, if you've documents in True Type nepali font formats, then there is a utility to convert them to unicode font. That little software is called converter(Rupanter). Now,i don't need to tell you each and everythhing here, how to use this. This is so easy, you can take help of your common sense. Download this utility from here.

Last but not the least, while saving documents in Unicode format, don't use the classic ANSI format as encoding. You've to set it as UTF-8 format as encoding. And, now the web part, some forums or website don't easily take unicode. If you want to write there, type unicode documents in word processor, copy it and paste on website forums. It's the simple trick you can use.

This is a new (major v4.0) version of UnicodeNepali.com.  We initially started this project back in 2005 as a weekend Computer Science experiment. In early 2006, the first version of the Unicode Nepali Converter was released for public use. Since then, several versions have been out and now, Nepali language enthusiasts from all around the Globe use the software every day.

This version of the software has several new and significant features. These include:

    Low-Bandwidth Mode for users with slow Internet connection, such as dialup;
    Multi-lingual support for both English and Nepali language; and
    Support for additional keyboard layouts (such as traditional--typewritter or MPP Romanized)

As much as it is rewarding in terms of self-satisfaction, it has been a challenge to find time to work on this project. So with this version, I am also changing the core framework of this project to make it more automated.  Now, any user can suggest a new word to be added to the converter's database and vote on pending words. After sufficient votes have been cast in support of the word, the word gets automatically published to the database and becomes immidiately available on the converter tools.
